Mission and Vision Statements for School Districts

Today I am reflecting on my recent study of mission and vision statements for school districts and the question of the school librarian's role in supporting Vision and Mission.

One of the many things I love about being a school librarian is the opportunity I have to see our building as a whole.  I have the pleasure of working with our entire staff and seeing every student in our building in the library every two weeks. My position affords me the chance to be a positive influence on all those I come in contact with on a daily basis. During our recent closure due to COVID-19, I realized how often I took for granted the smiles, hugs, hellos, and chitchat of our students and staff as I monitored the hall in front of the library doors during each passing time. I really miss that. The school librarian's power to be a positive influence is incredible!

The role of the school librarian in supporting the vision and mission of the school and the district is important because of this influence that the librarian has on the culture of the school.  If the school has a vision and a mission for success, and if the librarian is aligning the library program with the vision and mission of the school, then that is going to make student success even more bountiful. Everything seems to fall into place when you are in agreement with your team about what the plan is and how we are going to get there.

If you aren't aligning your library program with the vision and mission of your school, I would highly recommend doing so.  If you don't know your school's vision and mission or you know it hasn't been visited in a while, then I would encourage you to talk to your principal or superintendent and volunteer to help lead the team.
